![]() Launcells - St. Swithin - Grade I Listed - Norman & Early English. Launcells is situated a mile or so east of Stratton. Following the Holsworthy road (A3072) a lane is sign-posted on the left leading to Launcells. From this lane another narrower lane on the left leads down to the beautiful valley, tree endowed and watered by a small stream, in which nestles Launcells Church. The manor of Launcells (which has now disappeared) was held by Robert de Montaine, Earl of Cornwall, half brother to William the Conqueror and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book (1085). The church is unique in Cornwall being almost as the late Georgians left it, "the least spoiled church in Cornwall" according to Sir John Betjeman. The name Launcells is probably "Lancellys", meaning the church of Cellys and is possibly the same as Lansallos.
