![]() Kilkhampton - St. James - Grade I Listed - Norman, 15th & 16th Century. The King holds Chilchetone is how the Doomsday Book first records Kilkhampton in 1085. Of the Saxon or Norman churches little now remains, but the fortunes of the village and the church have been inextricably connected with the Grenville or Granville family ever since 1238. The village has an air of comfortable prosperity and is dominated by the church, a particularly fine example of the perpendicular style. The main A39 from Bude to Bideford passes through the centre of Kilkhampton, following the line of the old 'Ridgeway' which certainly dates back to Roman times, and there are numerous remains of early settlements around the present village.
