Walks, Forestry & Nature Trails

Wood.JPG (10450 bytes) There are so many walks and nature trails in this area that the visitor is spoiled for choice All Visitor Centres can provide maps and give useful advice and information about the routes. The descriptions given below are examples of the wide variety that is available
The Coastal Cliff Path can be walked in one-day sections, backpacking and staying each night at a different place, but many visitors prefer to use a hotel or guest house as a base and either drive or bus to a different starting place each day. Coast.JPG (10983 bytes)
Crackington.JPG (10991 bytes) Crackington Haven, is the starting place for a 9 mile walk to Bude, taking in a variety of scenery that includes an unusual woodland area (Dizzard Wood), some excellent cliff top views, before reaching Widemouth Bay and thence to Bude.
St John's Church, Morwenstow, is the start of an interesting and not too long circular walk. It takes in Hawkers Hut, a shelter on the cliffs built by the 19th-century Vicar, Robert Hawker. The walk continues up the Tidna Valley and returns via the inn to the church car park. The churchyard is of interest as the Reverend Hawker insisted that the bodies of seamen washed up on the foreshore should be given Christian burial there. He also built the Vicarage which can still be seen, with some chimneys modelled on the church towers of his previous parishes. The Vicarage grounds contain St John's Well which dates from the 11th century. Water from the well is still used in baptisms. Chruch.JPG (8474 bytes)

Cookworthy Woods off A3072 Holsworthy to Okehampton Road, 5 miles from Holsworthy.  Car parking.  The walk is 1.3 miles starting with a mature spruce forest, this leads to a Scots Pine area.  There is a fine view over the forest and moorland from an area of young larch.  The walk returns via the old railway line between Halwill Junction and Bude, passing a conservations pond that attracts a great number of dragon and damsel flies.
